OSRS Sailing Hunter Guide: How to Start Crab Trapping

With the release of Sailing, Old School RuneScape players have gained access to new islands, resources, and training methods-including a brand-new Hunter technique: crab trapping. Introduced alongside several new ocean regions, crab trapping offers a surprisingly chill experience rate, simple mechanics, and valuable secondary resources for Herblore and cooking. Whether you’re a mid-level player looking for steady Hunter XP, a higher-level adventurer gathering materials for powerful Armadyle brews, or someone who prefers to buy OSRS gold to speed up their progression, this guide covers everything you need to get started.

Why Train Hunter With Crab Trapping?

Crab trapping works similarly to traditional multi-catch methods like chinchompas, but with a smoother rhythm and fewer inputs. You build permanent traps at designated coastal spots, bait them, and cycle through the traps as they fill. Every crab you catch can be processed for crab paste, an ingredient needed for Armadyle brews, super hunter potions, and anti-odour salts. Higher-tier crabs also provide strong cooked food, making this a very efficient activity for irons and self-sufficient players.

Crab Types and Requirements

There are three species of crabs available, each tied to different Hunter, Cooking, and Sailing levels.

Red Crabs

· Hunter Requirement: 21

· Cooking Requirement: 21

· Quest Requirement: Completion of Pandemonium

· Location: Pandemonium Island

· XP per catch: 64

· XP when cooked: 85

· Healing: Restores 8 Hitpoints

Red crabs are the entry-level option and a great introduction to the method. After catching them, you can use a knife to extract crab meat or cook them for modest healing food.

Blue Crabs

· Hunter Requirement: 48

· Cooking Requirement: 48

· Quest Requirement: Partial completion of Trouble Tortugans

· Location: Great Kunch Island

· XP per catch: 136

· XP when cooked: 145

How to get to Great Kunch Island

You may sail directly to the island or use Fairy Ring code CJQ. Players with 50 Agility can take a shortcut that leads directly south toward a dock. From there, board the rowboat to the island’s eastern coast. Head a short distance south to reach the cluster of five trapping spots-your main area for blue crab hunting.

Rainbow Crabs

· Hunter Requirement: 77

· Cooking Requirement: 77

· Sailing Requirement: 74

· Location: Crown Jewel Island

· XP per catch: 216

· XP when cooked: 200

· Healing: Restores 19 Hitpoints

Rainbow crabs are the premium version of the method. Crushing a rainbow crab with a pestle and mortar gives rainbow crab paste, a key Herblore ingredient used to make Armadyle brews at 89 Herblore. These potions combine the effects of a Saradomin brew with a ranged potion, making them one of the strongest hybrid potions available.

Tools, Bait, and Trap Construction

Before you can begin trapping, you must build the traps at their designated spots. These traps are permanent, meaning once you create them, you can return any time without rebuilding.

Materials Needed

· Hammer

· Saw

· Bucket

· 1 plank

· 2 nails (any type)

· Fish offcuts for bait

Getting Fish Offcuts

Use a knife on any raw fish to create offcuts. If you don’t have spare fish, aerial fishing is a quick and reliable method for generating a large supply.

Rainbow Crab Bait

Rainbow crabs require fine fish offcuts, produced only from high-level fish such as sharks, sea turtles, and similar species.

How to Trap Crabs

Once your traps are built and baited, the process is extremely straightforward:

1. Click the trap to bait it.

2. After a short time, harvest the trap.

3. Immediately rebait and repeat.

The method is intentionally simple and has almost no delay between action cycles. Many players simply spam-click the trap, making this one of the most relaxed Hunter methods in the game.

Bring a Pestle and Mortar

Crab paste is stackable, so crushing the crabs on the spot prevents inventory clutter and allows for longer trapping sessions.

Final Thoughts

Crab trapping blends the best qualities of traditional Hunter training with the new Sailing ecosystem. Red and blue crabs provide smooth mid-level experience rates, while rainbow crabs bring valuable resources for high-level Herblore. Although it may look click-intensive at first glance, the rhythm is simple and forgiving. If you’re looking for a fresh, profitable, and relaxing way to train Hunter-especially if you’re trying to progress without relying on cheap RS gold-crab trapping is one of Sailing’s biggest early wins. See you on the open seas, and good luck out there in Gielinor!
